About Wellington College Weather
Wellington College was founded by Queen Victoria and Prime Minister The Earl of Derby in 1859 as the national monument to Britain's greatest military figure, the Duke of Wellington, who also served the country with distinction twice as Prime Minister.
Wellington College is a vibrant and popular co-educational boarding and day school where girls and boys learn to be leaders for life and aims to be one of Britain's, and the world's, leading and most inspiring co-educational schools for boarding and day pupils. .
As Head Groundsman the weather has always been a dominating factor affecting my planning and organisation for sportsground maintenance. All short term planning for maintenance of Wellington College's 80 acres of playing fields has to be done with the weather in mind. School sports fixtures can also be affected by by the weather.
It is always interesting to know how much rain fell the night that left a pond on a rugby pitch. How strong a gust of wind was that brought down branches from trees. How long the drought was that left the grass dry and brown. How high the temperature rose to leave us grabbing a glass of water or how cold it was at night that made the ground hard as iron.
More importantly, rates of evapotranspiration, rainfall quantities, temperature, humidity, periods of dry weather, wind speed and windrun are all useful data to know when managing sportsturf.
I have recently installed a weather station at Wellington College and monitor and record weather data which will be updated as often as possible on this site.
